Diversification of the region in G.D.R. del Medio Guadalquivir
The main economic activity of the region is agriculture. The figures are overwhelming, with a total of more than 90,000 hectares of arable land, of whom are moreover a very high percentage of irrigated land.
One of the main features of agriculture in Medio Guadalquivir and other agricultural areas of the province of Cordoba, is the high proportion of surface irrigation-commissioning. On many farms water is directly extracted from river by elevation.
A large percentage of irrigated lands respond to public, being framed in the communities of watering, a total of 17 initiatives, manage the available water resources through existing irrigation infrastructures. Of the total irrigated area, the communities of watering of the zone Medio Guadalquivir managed approximately 60% of the same.
Medio Guadalquivir River irrigation potential is of great importance for the region. We must stress the cultivation of citrus fruits, being one of the producing and marketing most important areas of Andalusia with Center in Palma del Río. An incipient production especially vegetables, do provide for a new key in the development of the region and an alternative for irrigation. Franca decaying crops such as cotton and sugar beet, staying, corn and sunflower.
The olive grove is another potential of the region, surpassing the 30,000 hectares, predominating olives dry land in the countryside and highlighting especially Bujalance and Cañete de las Torres and producing media exceeds 25 million kilograms of olive oil. I should add that you there are more than 30 mills in the region.
Cereal production is clearly very strong, especially in the countryside, with wheat, with important productions given the fertility of our countryside, in spite of being irrigated.
