Geographical area of CEDER La Serena
The region of La Serena is located east of the province of Badajoz, bordered by the provinces of Córdoba and Ciudad Real. Framed on the North by the Guadiana river to the East and South by the River Zújar and West by the River Guadámez. The average height of the region is located around of 400 meters above the sea, although in spite of that height comarca is located in one of the zones more features in the Extremadura peneplain. Materials that can be found in this part of the ancient Extremadura are mostly Granites, blackboards and stemming from the eroded and primitive massif Hesperian which drew Extremaduran geography early Palaeozoic quartzite.
It is a very homogenous historical district geographically. It has an area of 2.784,71 km2 44.947 distributed people in 19 municipalities. The main towns are Castuera, Cabeza del Buey, belfry, Quintana de la Serena, Zalamea la Serena and Monterrubio de la Serena. The geographic position of the region is very fully peripheral its economy away from the main routes and corridors of development in the region, based on the primary sector fundamentally.
The territory of the autonomous community of La Serena is defined mostly by extensive plains gently undulating, devoted to irrigated cultivation traversed by small mountain ranges. This landscape is broken on the southern edge by a more rugged with multiple, small hills landscape and on the northeast edge by large reservoirs
La Serena bathed by the River Zújar, highlighting the large reservoirs in its territory: Orellana, Zújar and La Serena.
The main roads of access to the region are:
- Former 103 which crosses the region from South to North. Connects the area with Llerena and the N-432 (Granada-Córdoba - Málaga).
- Ex-autonomic 104, that connects the Shire in direction East-West (Cabeza del Buey - Campanario - Villanueva de la Serena - Don Benito).
- Ex-114, which connects the province in North-South direction, from ex-111 links with Azuaga and the N-432.
The province has access by rail, thanks to the line Madrid - Badajoz - Lisbon.
